It would be nice to be able to claim that the heading to this post is original! It isn't - but it surely sums up the results of Thursday's General Election from a Conservative Party perspective. When Mrs May(be; maybe not) decided (having constantly said that she would not do so) to go to the country, the Conservatives had a substantial lead, in the polls, over Labour. During the campaigning period, the PM seemed to work hard at reducing that lead - and, in that she did have considerable success! The result is that we have a minority government in Westminster, dependant upon the DUP to survive! Now, if "the big fella" (aka the Rev. Dr. Ian Paisley, decd.) was still in charge, that would be, in my opinion, a much more interesting situation!
So what went wrong? Well, political pundits have been speculating on that for more than 24 hours and, from the perspective of most (all?!) of them, their conclusions may have much validity. One could say, fairly, that the PM was badly advised. It might be claimed that she ought not to have called the General Election in the first place. Many believe that she is as dithering, and useless, a PM as she was Home Secretary. "She was a dreadful Home Secretary, she has been a dreadful Prime Minister and dreadful election party leader who ran a dreadful election campaign." (Melanie Phillips). There are those who claim that the Labour campaign was much better than anyone had expected - and, of course, the sudden "illness" of the Shadow Home Secretary, and her immediate replacement, was certainly a master-stroke!
However, if we step back, and seek to look at the situation from a different perspective, is it possible that we are simply seeing the hand of Almighty God in all of this? I believe that this is most certainly the case. The big question, in my mind, is: "Is it the hand of judgement on a nation that has turned its back upon Him, and departed so far from His ways?" As I read that the Episcopal Church (ought that word to be placed within quotation marks?!) in Scotland has joined the Kirk in its acceptance of so-called "marriage" for homosexuals and lesbians - with the Provost of St Mary’s Cathedral in Glasgow stating that: “it's time for the church to celebrate what is celebrated in secular society” (rather than seeking to challenge secular society with the full Gospel of the Lord Jesus, the Christ); as I see the increasing marginalisation of the Judaeo-Christian heritage that has shaped so much of our nation's history; as I watch, with great sadness, the deliberate corruption of children with "transgenderism" being introduced to even primary schools; as I am aware of the way in which Islam is constantly deferred to (not least by the current PM, especially when she was HS!); I am inclined to answer that question positively.
So what do we do in such a situation? Thankfully, it is not without precedent. As we read the pages of the Tanakh (the "Old Testament") we discover that the nation of Israel often came under the judgement of Almighty God. (see, e.g. Isaiah 5:5-7). This should not have surprised them! Words that are often quoted out of context are "... if My people who are called by My name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land." (II Chron.7:14). But, as always, context is important! So we read in the previous verse, the words of YHWH: "When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, ..." In other words, the promise is a response to a nation that has suffered judgement.
The following verses are also important: "... if you turn aside and forsake my statutes and my commandments which I have set before you, and go and serve other gods and worship them, then I will pluck you up from the land which I have given you; and this house, which I have consecrated for My name, I will cast out of My sight, and will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples. And at this house, which is exalted, every one passing by will be astonished, and say, ‘Why has YHWH done thus to this land and to this house?’ Then they will say, ‘Because they forsook YHWH, the God of their fathers, Who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold on other gods, and worshiped them and served them; therefore He has brought all this evil upon them.’” (vs.19-22).
In days past, we had leaders who were neither ashamed, nor afraid, to call for a national day of prayer for the nation. I know that, in a number of church buildings, on Thursday, people were gathering to pray - not for any particular party or individual, but that God's will might be fully accomplished. I choose to believe that His will is, indeed, being fulfilled in this day and age, as in any other.
In my personal devotions, every day, I pray for this nation and its leaders. I pray that the Lord will raise up men and women of faith and integrity to positions of secular power, and influence, and authority. I pray that the nation will be hauled back from the brink of godless disaster. I pray that it will become a nation in which the Name of Jesus is respected by all, and honoured and exalted, by many.
Will you join with me in praying in such a way? Perhaps, if we do, we will discover that the Lord Who judges is also loving and merciful and gracious - and be, once again, the recipients of that love, and mercy, and grace. It will be for our good - and for His eternal glory.

Many of the posts are comments on current affairs, from a Biblical perspective, but I also include some straightforward Christian teaching; poems and songs that I have written; quotable quotes; and information on the persecuted church. Some of my posts stray into politics, and science!

The fragility of life.
During my adult life I have, at one time or another, voted for every major political party - and even for one or two of the 'fringe' parties! With one exception. I have never voted in support of any Labour Party candidate in any election in which I have taken part. Normally, I am not unhappy to see the Labour Party experiencing any form of discomfort.
However, today's tragic murder of a sitting Member of Parliament is a shock to the system. Oh, I know that there are parts of the world in which such politically-motivated assassinations are not uncommon. But in the UK; in Yorkshire; in the street outside a constituency office? That is frightening.
The late Jo Cox was not my own MP, and I only know what I have read in the media, but the young, married, mother-of-two was simply going about her lawful business when, it would appear, a crazed gunman shot her - not just once, but three times - and stabbed her. Much will undoubtedly be made of the earlier reports that he was shouting some kind of "pro-Brexit" slogan (the MP was involved in the "Remain" campaign) but, at this moment, no-one seems to know the motivation behind the attack.
What we know, for certain, is that a man has been widowed, and two children left motherless, all because of a mindless act of violence. It is also a reminder of the fragility of human life. Writing to the church at large, James (the half-brother of the Lord Jesus) exhorts: "Come now, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and get gain'; whereas you do not know about tomorrow. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes." (James 4:13-14). Centuries earlier, the psalmist-king of Israel David, had written: "As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more." (Ps 103:15-16).
It was Benjamin Franklin who said that "In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." However, while many will talk (and talk, and talk!) about taxes, death has become the taboo subject in polite social circles. Yet, while it is possible to evade, and/or avoid, paying taxes, neither money, nor influence, nor position, nor anything else can enable us to escape the cold hand of death. And, of course, we do not know the moment in which death will strike us.
Surely, then, the sensible thing is to be prepared for that inevitable event. How may we make such preparation? Well, there is the legal aspect of having a will drawn up so that there can be no doubt as to what we want to happen to whatever we leave behind (and that is, of course, everything!). However, I am thinking beyond that.
The vast majority of humankind believes - even if they do not often voice that belief - that this mortal life is not the totality of our existence. There is a life beyond the grave for which this life is but a preparation. Only One has offered any hope for that life - the only One to have conquered death: Jesus of Nazareth, Who was crucified, died, and was buried, but Who rose victoriously from the dead. Concerning Him, the apostle Paul writes: "... Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a Man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at His coming those who belong to Christ. Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power." (I Cor 15:20-24).
What you and I need to do is to come to Him, confessing our own sinfulness - and our inability to do anything about it - and receive the forgiveness of Almighty God that the Lord Jesus has gained for us. This is how we may meet death with a steady eye, knowing that our eternal future is safe in Him.
Whenever I conduct a funeral service I try, sensitively, to make the point that, whatever the spiritual condition of the deceased, there is nothing that I can do for them. However, I can point those who are present to the way of salvation. Where do you stand in relationship to Almighty God as you read this post? If you were to die in ten minutes' time, are you fully prepared?
Writing, again, to the Corinthian believers, Paul reminds them that: "... now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation." (II Cor 6:2). Have you come to Jesus, in repentance and faith? If not, then you are not ready for death. There are a couple of useful links at the right-hand-side of this page and, of course, you may contact me by e-mail at author@minister.com
When Jo Cox set off to go to her office today, I am certain that the last thought in her mind was that she would never see her husband and children again. I don't know how prepared she was. But what about you? Are you prepared?

Identification - it's so important!
So, the English and
Welsh local council elections have come and gone! The results appear to indicate that the
United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) is now a major force with which to be
reckoned in British politics. In my
opinion, for what it's worth, this is no bad thing. The three "major" parties - the
Conservatives, the Labour Party, and the Liberal Democrats - have shown, over
recent decades, to be increasingly separated from "ordinary" people. They have been, overwhelmingly, filled with
career politicians who seem to have personal conservation as their highest
priority, and the serving of those who elected them delegated well down the
list. Now I know that there are
honourable exceptions - the problem is that they are exceptions!
"In the
beginning, God created the heavens and the earth, ..." Moses tells us.
(Gen.1:1) That amazing act of creation
culminated in the creation of mankind - the only 'part' of creation made in the
image of the Creator (Gen.1:26-27), and into which the Creator breathed His own
life (Gen.2:7). Mankind was created, we
understand, to enjoy unbroken communion and fellowship with its Creator. Regretfully, that same mankind allowed sin to
enter the world that God had declared to be "... very good!"
(Gen.1:31), and so was cut off from the Creator, and banished from the
beautiful Garden in which they had been placed. (Gen.3:23).
That could, quite
easily, have been the end of the story.
God had acted with perfect justice, in accordance with Gen.2:17. However, His written Word assures us that the
Almighty, creating God is not only perfect justice, but that He is also perfect
Love! Indeed, love is the very essence
of His being (see I John 4:8, 16).
Because of this, he was not prepared to leave a sinful humanity with no
escape from its predicament. In what is referred to as the
"protoevangelium" ("first Gospel"), He makes clear that a
single descendant of the woman will open the way for mankind to, once again,
have a deep and personal relationship with its Maker. (see Gen.3:14-15).
In order to do
that, this same Almighty God, the Creator and Sustainer of all that is, took
upon Himself, in the Persona of the Son (see my book {details at top of blog} -
chapter on the Trinity), human flesh and, unlike so many modern politicians,
became one of us. He was not separated
from the "common man" but "... understands our weaknesses, for
He faced the same testings we do, yet He did not sin." (Heb.4:15). He lived among us, a man among men; He died
for us, bearing "... our sins in His Body on the tree, that we might die
to sin and live to righteousness." (I Peter 2:24); He rose from the dead,
victorious over sin, death, hell, and the grave. (see, e.g., I Cor.15:51ff).
He is also the One
Who has promised that He will return (Jn.14:3) and, unlike the average
politician, He keeps His promises - to the letter! As I look about me, I am increasingly
convinced that that coming again is not far off. I am not so foolish as to join the ranks of
those who have claimed to have predicted the very day on which the Rapture
(chapter on the subject available in my book!!) will take place. However, I am certain that it will - possibly
during my own mortal lifetime!
The Rapture will be
a truly earth-shattering event - but it will merely fore-shadow the coming
again of the Lord Jesus in judgement. It
will be then that "... the kings of the earth and the great men and the
generals and the rich and the strong, and every one, slave and free, [will
hide] in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, calling to the
mountains and rocks, 'Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him Who is seated
on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; for the great day of their wrath
has come, and who can stand before it?'" (Rev 6:15-17).
May all who read
this post be spared that terrible situation, by turning to Him now, in
repentance and faith, and accepting Him as their personal Saviour and Lord -
for your own good, and for His glory. If
you think that I may be of any further help, please do not hesitate to contact
me, in order that I may respond at a personal level.

Happy Families!
It's probably a card game that isn't even known by today's children but, when I was young, Happy Families was a favourite - along with Snap, and Donkey; and non-card games like Ludo, and Snakes and Ladders!
The announcement of the new Shadow Cabinet, earlier today, reminded me of the Happy Families game. Not only do we have Ed and Dave (and I don't believe, for one minute, that brother Dave will be out of the limelight for very long!), but we have the (in my opinion!) aptly-named Ed Balls and Mrs Balls (who, for some reason, prefers to be known by her maiden name of Yvette Cooper), and even a set of twins in the Eagle sisters!
So, is this a sign that renewed "new generation" Labour will favour the family unit, in the destruction of which their immediate predecessors (New Liebour - no, that isn't a typo!) played such a prominent part? Sadly, I doubt it. It looks to my 'non-professional-political-commentator' eyes like the usual cronyism that is one of the hallmarks of the Labour Party - and has been for as long as I have taken any real interest in politics.
These are the very people who stood (or sat!) by and watched the banks spend untold millions on useless assets. These are the very people who allowed a property boom that was fuelled by people borrowing six times their annual gross salaries (and more!). These are the people who watched a preponderance of television advertising that encouraged people to get into ever greater debt. These are the people who ran the whole country into debt by spending money that the nation didn't have. The only thing, I suppose, for which we may be thankful, is that young Ed didn't invite his immediate predecessor as Labour leader - the redoubtable financial wizard, "no more 'boom and bust' Mr Brown", to be the shadow Chancellor!
I recall, when I was in the Merchant Navy, meeting the most rabidly socialist person I had ever met - a ginger-headed Scouse baker. However, when the time came for a postal vote for an election, he informed me that he would be voting for the Conservative candidate in his home constituency! His answer, when I asked him why, was illuminating. He informed me that, while he espoused Labour principles, he always voted Tory because they ran the country, while Labour politicians merely lined their own pockets! As I look at Peter Mandelson pocketing 33% more, each month, in his EU pension than I receive each year in my own occupational pension, I recall my former shipmate - and conclude that he was absolutely right!

Is every 'Christian' a disciple of Jesus?
In spite of the regular claims that we in the U.K. live in an increasingly secular society, we just can't seem to get away from the 'God thing'! Mind you, some recent figures suggest that the real 'problem' is the vociferousness of a minority that gives them a prominence and a level of publicity that is well above what they, numerically, deserve! For example, the number of people returning to the Anglican Church, alone, on "Back to church" Sunday (Sept.27th) last year, could have filled the O2 Arena in London twice over - and still left a queue of some 7,000 people (the highest-quoted membership of the National Secular Society!) outside, without a seat!
It was on this morning's 'Sunday' programme on BBC Radio 4, and in the context of a Christian Socialist Movement church service that, reportedly, always precedes the annual Labour Party Conference, that the statement was made that: "Labour's new leader, Ed Milliband, is not a religious believer himself; but the last three leaders of the Party - John Smith, Tony Blair, and Gordon Brown, were all committed Christians."
It begs the question - "What did the reporter understand by the term 'Christian'?" Sadly, John Smith died before he had the opportunity to become the 'figure in the limelight' that his two successors were, so it is perhaps difficult for anyone outwith his circle of personal friends to make any comment on his personal faith in the Lord Jesus - the depth, or the lack, of it. However, when it comes to Messrs Blair and Brown, there is adequate evidence to suggest that neither of them was, or is, a true disciple of Jesus. Yet that is what a Christian ought to be! And that discipleship ought to be visible to others.
The true believer - as opposed to the person who makes a vocal claim - is supposed to be recognisable by his/her actions! I often used to explain to my pupils that, provided my vocal cords were operating satisfactorily, I could say anything I wanted, and make the most outrageous claims! But my mere calling myself a multi-millionaire doesn't add one single penny to my bank balance! And anyone who spent some time with me would quickly come to the conclusion that I am not such a multi-millionaire. The clothes I wear; the house in which I live; tha car I drive; the food I eat; the holidays I take; all point to the fact that my personal income is considerably less than the return from investments that a multi-millionaire would enjoy.
Jesus put it quite simply! "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? So, every sound tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears evil fruit. A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will know them by their fruits.
Not every one who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?' And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.'" (Matt 7:15-23; RSV)
The test, then, is not what I claim, but the way(s) in which I act. I would suggest that those who deliberately deceive a whole nation; those who extravagently spend other people's money to the extent that those people are left almost bankrupt; those who speak socialism, while owning multiple properties, and having millions in their bank account; those who are unable to control their own emotions, and throw items around the office to the accompaniment of words that are certainly not found within the pages of the Bible; are not living as disciples of Jesus, regardless of any soundbite they might provide.
Perhaps there is enough of 'the divine spark' in the mindset of the British electorate, that it was the blatant hypocrisy of such national leadership that led to the defeat of the Labour Party at the General Election earlier this year. If that is the case, then it is a salutary lesson to all politicians, regardless of party allegiance, to put honesty and integrity at the top of their personal agendas!
But, of course, that doesn't apply only to politicians, and others in the public eye. It applies to everyone who takes the name of Christian. Let our actions speak much more loudly than our words; let others see Jesus in us before they hear us speak about Him; let us be, not just those who call themselves Christian, but true disciples of Jesus, serving others in His Name - and bringing glory to Him.

The waiting continues!
So, Mr Brown has finally 'got the message', and has given a public assurance that he will resign as soon as a new government is formed. And there, as Shakespeare's Hamlet would say, is the rub! Because, as I type, there seems to be no sign of any firm agreement coming out of the lengthy, cross-party, discussions that are going on. Indeed, the water might be said to have been muddied by the news that, after however many hours of talking with the Conservatives, Mr Clegg's LibDems are also holding conversations with the Labour Party. There are those who are suggesting that Mr Brown's announced departure from the leadership of the Labour Party is a calculated move to enable the LibDems - whose leader was so public about not propping up Mr Brown, in government - to cosy up to the Labour Party.
It is all a bit of a mess! Yet, what can we expect from those who appear to be so determined, in spite of all of the evidence of past failures, to depend on their own perceived wisdom, and ability.
The Bible has a great deal to say about wisdom - which, by the way, is not totally synonymous with knowledge and understanding! Almost every chapter of the Old Testament book of Proverbs has a number of references to it. It is seen as something that: comes from the Lord (2:6 inter al); is of great importance (4:7); is a characteristic of those who do have understanding (10:13); and is of more value than even gold (16:16).
It is seen as just as important in the New Testament writings. It was to be one of the attributes of the earliest deacons (Acts 6:3); it is linked with 'spiritual understanding' (Col.1:9); it is differentiated from worldy 'wisdom', being "... first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy." (James 3:17, NKJV).
It must surely be our prayer that those most directly involved in this ongoing situation be filled with that wisdom - the wisdom that comes from God alone.

It must surely be our prayer that those most directly involved in this ongoing situation be filled with that wisdom - the wisdom that comes from God alone.
