Terrorist attack in London.

At the outbreak of the Second World War there were around 80,000 potential enemy aliens in Britain who, it was feared, could be spies, or willing to assist Britain's enemies in the event of an invasion. All Germans and Austrians over the age of 16 were called before special tribunals and were divided into one of three groups:
  • 'A' - high security risks, numbering just under 600, who were immediately interned;
  • 'B' - 'doubtful cases', numbering around 6,500, who were supervised and subject to restrictions;
  • 'C' - 'no security risk', numbering around 64,000, who were left at liberty. More than 55,000 of category 'C' were recognised as refugees from Nazi oppression. The vast majority of these were Jewish.
As the war continued, more and more Germans and Austrians were rounded up. When, in June 1940, Italy and Britain went to war, there were at least 19,000 Italians in Britain, and Churchill ordered that they all be rounded up. This was despite the fact that most of them had lived in Britain for decades.

In 1971, the UK government introduced internment of terrorist suspects in Northern Ireland. Although it could be, and has been, argued that this may not have been the wisest course of action in the particular circumstances, it does show what can be achieved if there is the political will to achieve it!

In the light of the murderous attack at Westminster on Wednesday, may I suggest - as many others have done - that it is time for the calling before similar tribunals, of all Muslim males over the age of 12 (radicalisation takes place long before 16!), and the internment of all who are deemed to be high security risks - and even the "doubtful" cases? I am fully aware that not every Muslim living in the UK is a jihadist. However, I am also aware that jihadists do not go around displaying a lapel badge to identify themselves.

Regretfully, we do not currently have a Churchill in 10 Downing Street. Instead, we have a woman who was, in the opinion of many, a totally useless Home Secretary - who reduced the number of police officers in England, Wales, and N.Ireland - and is now revealing herself to be a useless Prime Minister!

Jesus said, "... he that is not against us is for us." (Mark.9:39-40), and it is perhaps time that the British government threw out the so-called "Human Rights Act" - that, in terms of truly basic human rights, is not really necessary in the UK - so that effective measures may be taken against all who seek to destroy the peace that should be expected in an allegedly democratic nation during peacetime.

The numbers involved are, of course, higher than in the Second World War - but women and younger children would be excluded (unless there was reasonable cause to intern some females who appear to be happy to support jihadists). However it is reckoned that over 70% of "refugees" are young men of fighting age, and we know, from the evidence of our own eyes, that the vast majority of the "children" who have been accepted into the UK are in their late teens, and twenties.

As we mourn the deaths that occurred on Wednesday, and those that have taken place since, but as a direct result of Wednesday's events; and as we express our genuine concern for those who have been injured - with some of them still on the critical list; may those who have accepted the responsibility of governing us, be willing to take positive, effective, action that will , if not guarantee, at least increase, the safety of the general public, and of the members of the emergency services who, yet again, showed their true calibre in the selfless assistance that they rendered to others in the immediate aftermath of that Islamist terrorist attack.

WW III is apparently over!

The newspaper headline says it all -

GERMANY AND FRANCE DECLARE: 'THE TIME HAS COME FOR A FEDERAL EUROPE'

So Frau Merkel has accomplished, with the assistance of the conniving little Sarkonaparte, what neither Kaiser Wilhelm nor Herr Hitler managed to do - and without a shot being fired!

Remember these words? -

"I would say to the House, as I said to those who have joined this government: "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat."

We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering.

You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy.

You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival.
... ... ... ...
I feel sure that our cause will not be suffered to fail among men. At this time I feel entitled to claim the aid of all, and I say, "come then, let us go forward together with our united strength." (Winston Churchill)

That was attitude! That was a man who cared, and cared passionately, for his country. That was a man who was able to inspire the British people in their hour of need.

What do we have today? The Cameroon; the Horse-fly; and the Millipede. Not a single inch of backbone between them - and what little there is, is as yellow as a canary!

Where is there a true leader in the country, today? Where is the man - or woman - who will rally the people with truth, rather than spin; with integrity, rather than falsehood; with courage, rather than continuing capitulation?

Where is the modern Churchill, who will urge the British people on with the promise that "... we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender ..."?

Battle of Britain Day

Today, as any student of modern history - and indeed, anyone who keeps abreast of the news - knows, is the day set aside to mark the Battle of Britain.  It was on  June 18th, 1940, that Winston Churchill gave a speech to the British people, announcing: "The Battle of France is over. The Battle of Britain is about to begin."  That battle was, primarily, for supremacy of the skies over the English Channel and south-eastern Britain and, within a short time, it had started in earnest.  However, by the end of October, 1940, the R.A.F. had demonstrated its overalll superiority.

One of the best-known of Mr Churchill's many memorable sayings refers to the bravery, and skill, of those R.A.F. pilots - over 500 of whom died during those momentous weeks alone - is " Never in the history of mankind have so many owed so much to so few."  And it is true that, without the heroic efforts of 'the few', Hitler and his Nazi party might have achieved the domination of Europe that they craved.  Of course, there are those - myself included - who believe that he used entirely the wrong strategy.  The E.U. has done a much better job of removing one cherished freedom after another, and we no longer have politicians of the calibre of Winston Churchill (although he had many flaws that are often overlooked!) to lead us, and to stand up to tyranny, however well it might seek to cloak itself in political respectability!

However, my mind has been going back to an event that, with all due respect to the memory of Mr Churchill, far outweighs even the achievements of 'the few'.  I think of a hill called Calvary, outside the walls of the city of Jerusalem, as it was some 2,000 years ago.  I think of a cross, and of the Man Who hung there - with two other men, one on each side.  But it is the One in the middle Who is the focus of attention.  For this Man - Jesus, from Nazareth - had made some astounding claims in the previous three years.  He had, in effect, claimed that He was God; and it was for that blasphemy that the Jewish hierarchy had insisted that the Roman Procurator, Pontius Pilate, have Him sentenced to death (John 19:7).

But what a death!  The Jewish prophet, Isaiah, had been allowed, centuries before, to have a glimpse into future time.  And he recorded what he saw: "He was despised and rejected - a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief.  We turned our backs on Him and looked the other way.  He was despised, and we did not care.  Yet it was our weaknesses He carried; it was our sorrows that weighed Him down. And we thought His troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for His own sins!  But He was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins.  He was beaten so we could be whole.  He was whipped so we could be healed.  All of us, like sheep, have strayed away.  We have left God's paths to follow our own.  Yet the Lord laid on Him the sins of us all.  He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet He never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, He did not open His mouth. Unjustly condemned, He was led away." (53:3-8; NLT - my emphases).

 And the result of that death?  His glorious victory over sin, and hell, and the grave!  It is through Him, and Him alone, that men and women, boys and girls, may know full salvation - forgiveness of sin, and the assurance of eternal life.  The conflict was, and is, spiritual, rather than physical.  So Paul reminds the early church in the Ephesus: "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." (Eph 6:12, NIV).  That salvation is available to all, and attainable by all.  It 'only' requires confession of my sinfulness, and my inability to do anything about it; acceptance that His death has paid the penalty for my sin; submission of my whole life to Him, as both Saviour and Lord; and sharing about Him with others whom I know and meet.

John records: "... I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb. They were clothed in white robes and held palm branches in their hands. And they were shouting with a mighty shout, 'Salvation comes from our God Who sits on the throne, and from the Lamb!'" (Rev 7:9-10; NLT).

One cannot get fewer people than one!  So, without detracting from the actions, and successes, of those Battle of Britain fighter pilots, of Him, it may be much more truly said that "Never in the history of mankind have so many owed so much to One Man."   Glory to His Name..
